Vince's Thoughts on the OU-Air Force Game

Again Demarco Murray and Ryan Broyles are the ones who save the day for the Sooners.  Landry Jones the OU QB is like two different people there is the QB who played against Utah State who besides a few short passes could not hit the Side of a Barn and there is the QB that played against Florida State who was confident and accurate and could play in the NFL.  Saturday against Air force we saw both Landrys.  We had the good Landry get us a score in our first touchdown but the next time Landry was good until the 20 yard line of Air Force where he over threw by wide margins open receivers twice for the sure TDs and had to settle for a Jimmy Stevens field goal who should be starting at Field Goal Kicker by the way. The Bad Landry pretty much played the rest of the half. The good Landry came back in the Second half and got us a 27-10 lead but the bad Landry took over from there and missed sure passes to ice the game.  THe local radio station in OKC basically says all of the OU team is inconsistant. I'm sorry but the offensive problems should be laid right at the feet of Landry Jones the QB. When he is good, OU is an offensive machine when he is not we are a less than average offense.  I do say Cameron Kenney dropped two key passes that would have resulted in First Downs that seem to bring on the bad Landry.  Hopefully Landry can leave the bad Landry on the bench for the rest of the year because it should get tougher from here for the Sooners.    Now for the defense, I don't understand Brent Venerables  the defensive coordinator for OU sometimes.  He is playing an OPTION football team and he plays a 5 db set.  Against the Option you should have three linebackers to stop the run with the 5 defensive lineman. Basically as many people on the line of scrimmage as possible. To defeat the option you have to penetrate the line of scrimmage and disrupt the QB going down the line and make him pitch early and then it just a regular running play with no options left.  Venerables took that away by taking the third linebacker which would have be the THE HAMMER Ronnell Lewis, and inserted a db which almost guaranteed the QB of Air Force freedom of movement and all options in the running game.  I know they pass some but  the Air force guy was not that great of passer.  Also what teed me off Brent Venerables on a critical last drive by Air force where they had a 4th and 1, Brent calls a timeout.  I am thinking okay they have run the fullback on evey down where they needed less than three yards and I guessed that was what Brent was telling the players.  Nope I guess he thought something else because the fullback was wide open for the first down and eventually the touchdown to make it 27-24.  This made the next OU drive crucial to running out the clock. Luckily with Murray they were getting 4 to 5 yards a carry and they ran out the clock successfully.  Well the next game is the first road game for the Sooners playing a Cincinnati that did not look that good against NC State. Landry last year had trouble with road games- Good Landry please show up Cincinnati   GO SOONERS
