Saturday Night, I was at the game all excited about the new season and seeing the Sooners put a whuppin on Utah State, what I saw stunned me. Landry Jones was terrible. He looked like he was in Nebraska instead of the friendly confines of Norman Oklahoma. He threw behind or ahead of the OU recevers sometimes by as much as three yards. What was worst was his reaction to the defensive rush, he acted like he had never played and literally was in a panic, instead of stepping in to the pocket or throwing the ball away. He did throw for two touchdowns but he also threw two interceptions. So with him being so bad Ryan Broyles only got like two tds, and the brunt of the offensive was left to Demarco Murray. Demarco was awesome running for 218 yards and two touchdowns. What is bad is Demarco had to do it mostly on his own, very few holes were opened by the young offensive line of Oklahoma. He had a great 63 yard run for a touchdown that showed he had his speed back from his injuries of years past.
Now for the Defensive; Jamal Fleming one of the starting cornerbacks for Oklahoma needs to be renamed to TOAST because he was burned so much by Utah State receivers. He looked right at the receiver when the ball was coming toward him and sometime let it go right over his shoulder into the arms of the receivers just turn around and you have an interception. I know he gets coached that way, but I loved the Deon Sanders (I know he is a once in a decade player) school of defensive back. Deon on every pass simply realized and acted upon the thought which was I have just as much right to intercept the pass as the receiver has a right to catch the pass. That is what Jamal fleming should have thought just turn around and open your arms and you would have an interception. Demontre Hurst the other cornerback got burned to but he did get an interception. Nelson the safety was equally burned bottom line Utah State in addition to the many receptions by the receivers, the Utah State QB overthrew three passes where they were wide open for touchdowns. Venerables must look at those wide open missed as TDs in practice. THe whole defensive was sub par, there was no real push on the pass rush from the defensive line. Just terrible up and down the whole defense.
If Landry Jones does not wake up and realize he is supposed to be better this year and calm down in the pocket we are looking at a big Loss next Saturday. Hopefully since Landry is up and down, next week is the UP turn and then we will be all right. IF the defense actually lives up to their potential.
Next Week the big one Florida State comes to town, Go Sooners
